Description:
The Roberts-Farris Cabin was built around 1940 for Allen Roberts, a stepson of one of the original Walker county settlers, Hezekiah Farris. Its distinctive square-hewn logs and half-dovetail notches are found in several other cabins an buildings in the area. Moved a number of times, it was finally situated on the property of Alton Farris, who rented the cabin out to tenant farmers throughout the years of the depression, including a couple who used it as their honeymoon cabin in 1939. During the following sixty years it was used as a storage shed for hay before being rescued in 2001 through the efforts of Maggie Farris Parker, Dr. Carolina Crimm and the students from Sam Houston State University, who moved it to the town square as a part of a Main Street Project where it is currently open for tourists. Reading about this cabin's restoration and its final resting place is a fun slice of history and other contributions make this book give you a solid connection to the builders, the occupants and those that rescued it.
